Thousands of State Farm Florida policyholders will start getting letters next week Monday February 1, 2010 saying they'll be dropped in August 2010.

State Farm Spokesman Chris Neal declined to say how many policies will be part of the first wave of cancellations in South Florida. But less than 20 percent of State Farm's 815,253 residential insurance policies statewide were in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties as of late June.

State Farm also received approval to increase statewide rates by 14.8 percent rate hike on average. The increase comes on top of what amounts to a 28 percent average statewide rate increase based on the insurer's decision to end rate discounts.
